Carpet

Fiber, pile, and the pad under it

Carpet is a face fiber tufted or woven into a backing, stretched over a pad. The pad is half of how it feels and a large part of how long the face lasts.

NylonThe usual residential fiber. It wears, it cleans, and it takes a pet better than a soft natural fiber. Solution-dyed nylon hides a bleach spot better than a piece-dyed floor.
Polyester and triextaStain resistance is the reputation. In a bright room, some of these fibers crush in the lane from the bed to the door sooner than a comparable nylon. That lane matters more than the sample square.
WoolQuiet, and specific. A poor match for a wet dog or a humid room next to a bath. A good match for a formal room that is actually used that way.
PadThe pad weight belongs in the proposal. Too soft, and the fiber flexes until the backing fails. Too thin, and you feel the tack strips.
Good fits

Rooms that want quiet

Carpet still does a job hard surfaces do not: sound, warmth, and a stair you can walk in socks.

BedroomsThe ordinary good use. It pairs with hardwood in the hall if the reducer is planned with both heights.
StairsGrip and sound. A waterfall install and a cap-and-band install are chosen before the pad is cut, including the landing.
Formal rooms with light trafficA dining room that is not a homework station can hold a softer face. A playroom will show lanes, and you should expect that.
Where we will argue against itBaths, kitchens, and basements that take water. Georgia humidity plus a spill is how carpet smells the next summer.
Install

A new pad, then a tight stretch

A loose stretch wrinkles in the first humid month. The craft is the seams, the direction of the pile, and the tack strips.

RemovalOld carpet and pad come up and leave. Loose or rusted tack strips are replaced. A pad that has turned to dust is not left under a new face.
What was hidingWe look for squeaks, pet damage, and high seams while the floor is open. Carpet hides a little. A spongy spot gets repaired before the new pad goes down.
SeamsSeams go where traffic and window light will not advertise them. Pile direction stays consistent through a doorway.
Stretch and finishPower-stretched to the tack strips, tucked, and trimmed. Transitions to wood or vinyl are finished reducers.
Care

Vacuum the lanes and keep the pad dry

Grit left in the pile cuts the fiber. Water left in the pad does not dry in a closed July house.

VacuumSlow passes in the traffic lanes. A beater bar on a looped Berber can fuzz it. The head should match the pile.
SpotsBlot. Scrubbing a soft cut pile into a swirl makes a permanent mark. Use a cleaner the fiber allows.
A spill that reaches the padIt needs air. A rug thrown over a wet spot holds the moisture in place.
FurnitureCups under heavy legs. Dragging a bed frame pulls the stretch out of a corner.
Carpet questions

Stairs, furniture, and what is underneath

Carpet jobs get simpler when the furniture and the stairs are discussed before the day.

Do you move the furniture?+

Bedrooms usually need the pieces out, or moved as we go if they are ordinary. An armoire, a large upholstered bed, or a piano is discussed before the day, because it changes the crew and the time.

Can you carpet only the stairs?+

Yes. Stairs are their own small project: nosings, the landing, and a clean end where the carpet meets wood or the existing floor.

What if there is hardwood under the old carpet?+

We will tell you what we find when the carpet comes up. Some of that wood is worth refinishing. Some was only ever a subfloor. We do not promise a hidden oak floor before we can see it.

Is a thicker pad always better?+

No. Past a point it makes the fiber flex and can keep doors from clearing. The pad should match the carpet, the room, and the door swings.

Bedrooms and stairs are enough of a project.

Tell us the rooms, the stairs, and whether the old pad is still in place.
